How To Reduce Your Cholesterol

Main Content Add comments

Your diet has a direct correlation to your state of health, regardless of what your eccentric uncle told you about eating bacon and eggs every day and living to a ripe old age. The pace of life today means our diets are not conducive to a healthy lifestyle, which is why we have seen a rise in obesity as well as an increase in conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. There are plenty of opportunities to learn how to lower cholesterol through good diet selection. Increase the amounts of fruit and vegetables in your daily diet. The USDA actually recommends five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables each day for good health.

A low cholesterol diet will aim mainly at reducing the amount of cholesterol you consume as well as reducing the amount of saturated fats and trans fats. There are foods you should keep to a minimum in your diet, especially the ones that offer very little nutritional value. One of the worst high cholesterol foods is fatty and processed meat. Substitute these high cholesterol foods with leaner choices like chicken breast or lean cuts of beef. Throw in a serving of fish or two every week as well. Salmon is a good choice because it is high in omega 3 fatty acids, which will help to counter the effects of high cholesterol foods. Other high cholesterol foods include dairy products like egg yolks, butter and cream. In many cases, you can opt for low-fat varieties that will contain less fat and still offer the nutritional benefits that dairy foods offer.
